My sister?” Why, why are you suddenly speaking formally? She can’t even remember what she did! “It would be good for my older sister to participate in the debutante ball this year too.” You told me not to go even last year… “How about a cool-looking guy with black hair who doesn’t seem to get a drop of blood even if he gets stabbed? What about a pretty and delicate young man like a puppy in the rain? There are people who are a little inferior to the two in front of them, but there is one person who is really good!” She even recited the men’s personal information saying she should know my taste. No, rather, do I look like I’m going to play with a guy now? “Will you marry me? Annette of Valois.” “Annette, Annette, I wish you were a parrot. So that I can watch and raise you in a cage.” Let’s play… It looks like we’re going to play… “Ah, but older sister! Life story of an otaku who buys a brand new robot maid. He’s quite an impressive otaku, with a huge collection of the things you associate otaku with… figures, cosplay costumes, removable skirts, etc. And now with the addition of the robot maid he can play dress-up and various other kinks. Problem is, she’s one of those "mother-figure" dolls who, through some obvious glitch in the programming, has one of those rare things known as “self-consciousness.” Needless to say, she gets rather distraught by the fact that her master is trying to dress her naked body up in some hentai outfit. And we are not even talking about the glitch in her programming: should she be a "love-doll" or "maid-doll"? Should she sternly lectured her master on the proper role of her as a maid? Or should she be a "real" maid who wait upon his every whims? Man oh man, lets watch the show commence.

Barefoot Gen recounts the bombing of Hiroshima from the perspective of a young boy, Gen, and his family. But the book's themes (the physical and psychological damage ordinary people suffer from war's realities) ring chillingly true today. Gen and his family have long been struggling without much food, money or medicine, but despite hardships, they try to maintain a semblance of normal life. The adults are exhausted and near despair; the children take air raids and starvation more or less in stride. Nakazawa, a Hiroshima survivor, effectively portrays the strain of living in this environment and shows how efforts to stay upbeat in dire circumstances sometimes manifest as manic, irrational humor. The story offers some optimism: characters perform acts of self-sacrifice for the sake of neighbors and loved ones (e.g., when Gen's pregnant mother becomes ill from malnutrition, he and his brother pose as orphans and perform in the streets, throwing the money over the walls of their home so they won't get caught). Underneath this can-do attitude are the parents' deep guilt and sense of helplessness. When the children clamor ecstatically over a scrap of food, the parents dissolve in shame and grief. The art is sharply drawn and expressive, and the narrative has such a natural rhythm, it's easy to get pulled into the family's life, making the cataclysm readers know awaits them all the more real, intimate and difficult to take. Despite its harrowing nature, this work is invaluable for the lessons it offers in history, humanity and compassion.
