Living with his impoverished family on a remote mountain, Tanjirou Kamado shoulders the responsibility of providing for his loved ones after the passing of his father. In an attempt to sell some charcoal, he descends to the nearby village on a chilly winter day. As night descends, he seeks refuge in the dwelling of a curious man who warns him of malevolent demons that dwell at night, lurking to satisfy their hunger for human flesh. Upon arriving home, Tanjirou's worst nightmare is realized as he discovers his family gruesomely murdered, save for his sister Nezuko who has transmuted into a cannibalistic demon. Consumed by hatred and despondency, Tanjirou endeavors to halt his sister's violence, embarking on a quest for retribution and a means to revert her back to human form.

Arriving in Chang'an during the Tianbao Era, Kong Hongjun was oblivious to current events and was given three key missions. He attempts to save him, though is swept away by the current and loses consciousness. Upon waking he finds himself in a mysterious city ruled over by a cruel tyrant. The chapters which make up Survival: Another Story were originally published in Shounen Sunday alongside the main series, and are included in the first 22 volume print by Shogakukan. However, later reprints have always collected the chapters into their own, separate volume.
