Stand Alone Complex takes place in the year 2030, in the fictional Japanese city of New Port. The story follows the members of Public Security Section 9, a special-operations task-force made up of former military officers and police detectives. The manga presents individual cases that Section 9 investigates, along with an ongoing, more serious investigation into the serial killer and hacker known only as “The Laughing Man.”

Scientists had predicted this disaster, and in response, the leaders of every country met to develop a plan for human survival before the meteor hit. The Seven Seeds project was developed out of this meeting. Each country froze a number of young healthy people, which allowed them to survive the meteor. After the computer determined that Earth was once again safe for human life, it released them into the world. The Japanese government created five groups of survivors: Winter group, Spring group, Summer group A, Summer group B, and Fall group. Each group consisted of seven members and one guide. The guide carried small tubes of poison on their necks to allow them to end their lives if their situation became unbearable. The Japanese government prepared seven "Fuji" as refuges for the groups. In each Fuji, the group would find seeds and numerous books instructing them on survival in the wilderness. 7 Seeds won the 2007 Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga.

The eerie ability of Kurusu Hiyori, daughter of a former police chief, is to predict murders in her dreams. However, everything changes when Hiyori dreams about the assassination of Claus Haida, a foreigner whose death she prevents. Despite the initial elation, Hiyori discovers that Claus is a monster who serves a foreign company, promoting teamwork with questionable intentions. Is she capable of collaborating with him? Volume 4 also features the one-shot "Akumu Imouto! Umaru-chan."

It might also be neither of these things… • Diadem A "Diadem" is a word for 'crown' that has its root in Greek. "Stephanos", which appeared in "Mandala" 01, was also a 'crown'. It seems that we could consider this the second work in a continuing series of shorts that should perhaps be called a "Crown series".
